Choosing An Acupuncturist

The most common way in finding an acupuncturist is by obtaining a referral from a family member or friend, especially if they have personal experience with that acupuncturist. Short of having a personal referral, your primary care physician or chiropractor may be able to refer an acupuncturist to you.

In Pennsylvania there are basically two types of acupuncturists:

Certified/Physician Acupuncturist

Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc.)

Certified physician require 200 hours of training.

Licensed acupuncturist require a minimum of 1,725 hours of training, most with a master's-level training of 2,700 hours of training. Including, but not limited to:

- Oriental medical theory.

- Diagnosis and treatment techniques in acupuncture and related studies.

- Clinical training.

- Biomedical clinical sciences.

- Observation including internship or treatment hours.

Training which is comprised largely of home study and videotaped lectures.

On-site training at a nationally accredited school or college of acupuncture.

Minimal clinical experience in acupuncture or no actual patient treatments before certification.

Hundreds of hours of clinical experience and at least 250 actual patient treatments before licensure.

Not required to complete the national certification examination for competency in acupuncture.

Required to pas the national certification exam (NCCAOM) in acupuncture in order to become licensed.

Consider the amount of training each receives in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). While physicians have extensive knowledge of Western medicine, nowhere in their training do they learn TCM and acupuncture, unless they've sought it out.

Western medicine and TCM have two different theories of medicine, and cannot be interchanged. Although there is some overlap, extensive training in one method of medicine does not translate into expertise of the other method of medicine. Like western medicine, Acupuncture and Oriental medicine is an art and a science that takes years to master.
