What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a complete medical system originated from China more than 2000 years ago, and is presently used as a primary health care system throughout the world. Traditional Chinese medicine views disease as the result of an imbalance or blockage in the body's natural energy flow Qi. Qi (pronounced chee in Chinese) is the name of this energy, and it travels in pathways known as channels or meridians from the surface of the body to very deep in the body. These meridians correspond to the vital organs such as heart, kidneys and liver. Such imbalances manifest in physical, emotional and psychosomatic stress-related disorders. By inserting acupuncture needles at critical points through human body, the acupuncturist is able to release obstructions and imbalances, thus returning the body back to a balanced state of health.

Why Acupuncture?

In the past, many patients chose acupuncture as a last resort after all conventional therapy had failed. Acupuncture treatment is free of harmful side effects. Where a choice is available, it is better medicine to select the least dangerous method first. Acupuncture stimulates the body to neutralize a disorder and reestablish health. There is no danger of infection from acupuncture needles, as I follow strict clean needle techniques and only utilizes disposable needles.

Acupuncture activates and speeds the body's own healing process. It is outstanding for its ability to address the underlying cause of illness or pain, not merely its symptoms. Acupuncture's ability as a general preventative tool and as an ideal treatment for a wide range of problems reinforces it as a first choice.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very different from hypodermic needles used for injections. They are very fine - about the thickness of a human hair. There should be very little or no discomfort with needle insertion. Once inserted, you may feel a sensation of heaviness, perhaps a slight cramping or distention around the needle that may travel up or down the affected Meridian. If any discomfort is experienced, it is usually mild, and not considered painful.

How deep do the needles go in?

For the most part, the needles are inserted between 1/2 - 1 inch below the skin.

Are the needles clean?

I am certified in the use of "clean needle technique", and only use individually packaged sterile disposable needles approved by FDA, for all my treatments.

How many treatments will I need?

Every person presents differently according to his or her condition; therefore the number of treatments will vary. Some of the determining factors are the type of condition and whether it is chronic or acute. The patient's vitality plays an important role in the outcome of the treatments. Therefore it is best to discuss this question with me on your first visit.

How long are the treatments?

Your first treatment will take longer than usual, as I must review the questionnaire you filled out and do a complete physical. This usually takes up to 1.5 hours. After this your typical treatment session should be less than one hour.

Should I stop taking my medications?

No, you should continue taking all your medications as per your physician's instructions.

But do bring in a list of all medications and herbs you are currently taking. Remember acupuncture is used in conjunction to your current healthcare program.

How do I prepare for a treatment?

- Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing, preferably shorts, or make sure you can roll up the pant legs and sleeves.

- No alcohol or recreational drugs before or after treatment.

- Make sure your stomach is not over full prior to treatment.

- No hot baths prior of after treatments.

- Prepare for the treatment by being as relaxed as possible.

- If you are having a home visit, keep all pets in an other room away from the treatment area.
